Band Clinic of the Count Basie Orchestra

This December, the Count Basie Orchestra will be visiting Japan and performing live concerts at Blue Note Tokyo. Some of you may have already made reservations, but at this time, all seats are sold out. However, on December 8, the orchestra will be hosting a clinic at the same venue. The participation fee is only 2,000 yen, and it will take place from 1:00 to 2:15 PM. Although ticket reservations are already closed on the official website, fortunately, TSDS has secured a few seats. If you wish to participate, please email tokyolindy@gmail.com as soon as possible. Last-minute cancellations cannot be accepted, and payment will be collected in cash on the day of the event.

During this clinic, they will not only perform several songs but also explain the “secrets” of the CBO sound, with current bandleader Scotty Barnhart leading the discussion, followed by a Q&A session. Last year, I asked about the musical reasons behind the compatibility of CBO’s sound with Lindy Hop at the clinic. And amazingly, we even had the opportunity to dance Lindy to the legendary Count Basie Orchestra! This is a wonderful Christmas present for swing dancers in Tokyo, don’t you think?

Lindy at the Jam Session, Kagurazaka, Wed Dec.4th

This is a traditional jazz session at MASH Records in Kagurazaka, organized by clarinet player Makiko Tamura and saxophonist Satoshi Ito. Both of them are professional jazz musicians, while the others are amateurs. Lindy hoppers are welcome to dance. Please note that this is NOT a regular concert for an audience, but rather a session for jazz musicians. A session is a type of practice meeting. The cost is 1,800 yen per person, and no booking is required. Please be aware that the dance floor is relatively small, accommodating only a couple of pairs, and the air ventilation and PA system in the room are somewhat inadequate. However, the organizers’ hospitality toward dancers is excellent. While Makiko is a superb clarinet player, she may also practice the piano during the session. The session will start at 7:30 PM and end at approximately 10:00 PM. Some of us will be going dancing there, as there will be no Necola Wednesday Night Hop at Studio Necola on that day.

A skeleton dancing the Shim Sham on a YouTube psychic channel

This YouTube channel features a female psychic who provides insights into various unsolved cases and spiritual phenomena, which is unrelated to swing dance. However, in this episode, there’s a skeleton dancing the Shim Sham in the back! That’s hilarious!
